Tucked away on the Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach is the Gulf Coast's best-kept secret. No high-rise condos, no crowded boardwalks — just miles of sandy beach, stunning sunsets, and the kind of laid-back Texas charm you can't find in Galveston.
Why Crystal Beach?
While most people flock to Galveston Island, Crystal Beach offers something different: peace and quiet. You can walk the beach for a mile and barely see another soul. The homes are spread out, the water is warm, and the pace of life slows down the moment you step off the Galveston Ferry.
It's the kind of place where you wake up to ocean sounds, spend the day fishing or building sandcastles, grill fresh seafood at sunset, and fall asleep to the waves. No itinerary needed.
Getting There
Crystal Beach is about 90 minutes from Houston. The most scenic route includes the free Galveston–Port Bolivar Ferry — a 20-minute ride across Galveston Bay where you might spot dolphins. It's an experience in itself and the kids will love it.
Alternatively, drive up from the north via Highway 87 to avoid the ferry altogether (about the same drive time).
Top Things to Do
Beach Days
The obvious draw. Crystal Beach has miles of Gulf-facing beach perfect for swimming, shell collecting, sandcastle building, and surf fishing. Many homes (including Seascape Beach House) are a short walk from the sand.
Fishing
The Bolivar Peninsula is a fishing paradise. Surf fish right from the beach for redfish and speckled trout, or head to Rollover Pass for some of the best pier fishing on the Texas coast. Deep-sea charters are available from nearby Galveston.
Bolivar Lighthouse
The historic 1872 Bolivar Point Lighthouse is a short drive from Crystal Beach. While you can't go inside, it's a great photo spot and a piece of Texas maritime history.
Fort Travis Seashore Park
Explore the ruins of a Civil War–era fort with bunkers, gun emplacements, and beautiful bay views. Great for history buffs and a unique afternoon outing.
Galveston Day Trip
Take the ferry over to Galveston for Moody Gardens, the Strand Historic District, the Pleasure Pier, and excellent restaurants. It's a perfect day trip when you want more action.
When to Visit
- Spring (March–May): Warm but not scorching. Wildflowers bloom and the beach is uncrowded. Our favorite time.
- Summer (June–August): Peak season. Hot and sunny — perfect beach weather. Book early as summer weekends fill fast.
- Fall (September–November): Still warm through October. Great for a quieter beach experience. Hurricane season — check weather forecasts.
- Winter (December–February): Mild by northern standards (50s–60s). Fewer crowds, lower prices. Perfect for a peaceful getaway.
Where to Stay
Our Seascape Beach House home is a stunning 4-bedroom beachfront property that sleeps 10. Walk to the beach in 5 minutes, enjoy ocean views from the deck, and gather around the fire pit under the stars.
It's pet-friendly too — bring the whole family, furry members included.
Dining & Essentials
Crystal Beach is small and quiet, so stock up on groceries before arriving. There are a few local spots worth knowing:
- Stingaree Restaurant: The local legend. Seafood, cold drinks, and live music right on the water.
- Crystal Beach Local Market: Good for basics and beach supplies.
- Galveston dining: Just a ferry ride away for more options — try Gaido's for classic Gulf seafood.
Insider Tips
- Bring everything you need — Crystal Beach is a small community, not a resort town.
- The ferry line can be long on summer weekends. Arrive before 8 AM or take the Highway 87 route.
- Don't miss the sunsets — they're legendary from the Gulf-facing beaches.
- Bug spray is essential in summer. The gulf breeze helps, but come prepared.
